Self Introduction |
To begin with, I started teaching since 2003 and when I was a full-time polytechnic student. My contacts were initially established through tuition agencies and then through referrals (siblings/friends of students and students' parents). Initially, I provided tuition to local primary students. And as I got more confident, I proceeded to teach students of Secondary levels and teaching foreign students at private hostel. I managed to help these foreign students enrol in government schools and score in their English subject thereafter. I started teaching as I saw it as a flexible way of earning an income during my polytechnic and university days. However, I never stop teaching upon my graduation from SMU and even though I am employed with a full-time position. This is partly due to the guardians' persuasion and friendship with existing students, I continue to teach them on weekday evenings and weekends. With regards to my teaching methods, I try to simplify learning for my students with my devised grammar rules and engage students' interests in reading. I also emphasize in thinking creatively when it comes to composition writing. I realise that many students are not capable of writing freely as they limit their imagination to their personal experience and stating mere facts. Hence, I encourage them to think out of the box and write their thoughts and ideas instead of mundane daily lives. I encourage them to be exam-smart by preparing and familiarizing their own sets of notes on "interesting/emotions-triggerin g expressions" prior to exams. With sufficient preparation, this helps to manage their anxiety of the unknown and to better manage their time wisely during examination. When I see my students picking up such exam-smart skills and score in their English and this definitely encourages me to carry on teaching. Above shared are just some experience and thoughts of mine.
