Self Introduction

2015 Tuition Writeup

Personal Writeup:

I am a full time tutor specialising in teaching secondary (both 'O' Levels and Integrated Programme) English and Literature, 'A' Levels General Paper, Literature (Previously Papers 1, 2, 4 and 5; Currently Papers 1, 2 and 3) , Knowledge and Inquiry, as well as Project Work. I am also highly experienced in teaching International Baccalaureate English/Literature (English Language A1, English Language and Literature, English Language B, at both Standard and Higher Levels), Extended Essay and Theory of Knowledge. As a Masters of Arts Research Scholar from NUS, I am fully competent in teaching English, General Paper and Literature, and I have more than 15 years of teaching and tutoring experience. I have also taught university undergraduates literature in NUS, and have conducted General Paper classes at private tuition centres. I am greatly experienced in teaching foreign students English as a Second Language (ESL), and I offer lessons for TOEFL, IELTS as well as SAT. My past students have come from China, Korea, Indonesia, Malaysia, Taiwan, Thailand and Kazakhstan. As a language specialist, I also conduct language skill classes for adults, as well as teach Business English to working professionals.

I mainly offer one-to-one tuition sessions as I feel that this is the most effective form of learning for the student, but group tuition sessions can be arranged if the students in the group are at similar learning levels. I also conduct intensive revision for groups of 4 to 6 students, and these group sessions have proven to be highly effective in teaching important content and key examination skills to students.
I provide a wide array of past year papers from all the top schools and actual Cambridge past year practices (both local and international exams) for IGCSE, 'O' Levels English, Literature, ‘A’ Levels General Paper and Literature, along with important notes for the subjects that I teach. I also provide past year IB papers for practice, along with actual IB examiner's marking schemes, so that my students have a clear idea of the IB marking criterion. I guide the students in formulating their own TOK and Extended Essay topics, and help them craft their arguments. I mark the students' assignments meticulously and provide detailed explanations when I go through the work with them. I am keenly aware of the syllabi changes for O level students taking the exams from 2013, and I am also well equipped to teach the new A level curriculum for literature which was launched in 2012. As for IB's new syllabi for Language and Literature, Language B (first exam May 2013) and Theory of Knowledge (first exam May 2015), I have participated in IB teachers' workshops to ensure my knowledge of these subjects are current and up to date.

My past and present IP students have come from Raffles Institution, Raffles Girls School, Dunman High School, River Valley High, Hwa Chong Institution, Nanyang Girls' High, National Junior College and Victoria Junior College. My IB students have come from Anglo Chinese School (Independent), School Of The Arts (SOTA), Methodist Girls' School (started offering IB in 2014), as well as international schools such as Anglo Chinese International School, Hwa Chong International School, German European School Singapore, Overseas Family School, Chatsworth International School, Australian International School Singapore, Canadian International School, ISS International School and Nexus International School.
Of all the students that I have taught in the last 15 years, all of them have made a significant improvement (minimal 3 grade jump) in their English/GP/Literature grades. My best achievements to date are helping students who were previously failing (F9/E8 for 'O' Levels or S/U for 'A' Levels) improve their grades to As and Bs.

Achievements and Students' Results:

I am particularly proud of aiding my ACS(I) IB student achieve a near perfect score of 44 out of 45 in the 2011 IB examinations, and helping my VJC and ACJC students score 7As in the 2011 A Levels. For the VJC girl, I tutored her in H2 and H3 Literature, as well as Knowledge and Inquiry. The ACS(I) and VJC students are both currently reading law in NUS, and they have each won a place in the highly prestigious Double Degree Programme in Law and Masters in Public Policy at the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy, which was only awarded to seven carefully selected recipients (Their testimonials are available for reference).

In the 2011 ‘A’ Levels examinations, 4 of my students scored As for Literature and 2 of them scored Bs. These results are particularly heartening because all the students saw a minimal 3 grade improvement, with the biggest improvement coming from an ACJC student whom I taught intensively for just 2 months before the ‘A’ Level examinations. He was previously scoring Cs and Ds in Literature, but managed to pull it up to an A with twice-weekly lessons, in spite of his school teacher's prediction that a C grade was the best that he could manage. With the A in Literature, he managed to achieve a perfect score of 7 As in the ‘A’ Level examinations, and the A in literature has been instrumental in him being offered the Double Degree Programme at the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy for a BBa in Accountancy and Masters in Public Policy, which is only open to candidates with perfect scores. Furthermore, he has also been accepted into NUS's University Scholars Programme, and is on the path towards the university education he aimed for.

In the 2012 PSLE exams, the 3 students I tutored scored 255 (English A*), 249 (English A*) and 235 (English A) respectively. The student who'd scored A for English used to be very weak in the subject, but with weekly lessons she made tremendous improvement, moving her grade up 2 notches from a C to an A. This has helped her achieve 4As for her PSLE, and enter the secondary school of her choice.
For the 2012 O Levels results, my St Nicholas Girls' School student scored A2s in both English and Literature, a great improvement as she used to score C5/C6 for Lit. A student from Singapore Chinese Girls' School that I taught for just 12 lessons before the O Levels managed to pull her C6 Prelims grade in Literature up to an A1. This 5 grade improvement has helped her achieve a perfect score of 6 points, which was critical for her entrance into the competitive ACS(I) IB Programme to pursue her first choice of getting an IB Diploma. (Once again, all their testimonials are available for reference).

My students' 2012 A Levels results were sterling, as two of my students scored As for literature while one scored a B. One of the As students achieved a perfect score of 7 distinctions in her results, including As in both H2 and H3 Literature. As a triple science student, literature was her contrasting subject and she managed to excel in it. She has been accepted into the highly selective NUS Medical School and is currently pursuing her childhood dream of becoming a doctor. The student who scored a B was a private candidate who used to be an E/D grade student, but has managed to improve her lit results significantly under my tutelage. This improvement in her results has gained her entry into NUS, and she is currently studying at the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. For GP, my students performed exceptionally, and besides the students who scored As, the biggest improvement came from a CJC girl whose GP grade jumped from S to C within a few months of lessons. My student whom I helped with Project Work scored an A. (Testimonials are available for reference.)

For the 2013 IB results, 7 of my students scored grade 5 and above, with 2 students scoring grade 6, and this was after just a few months of lessons. A student from China whom I tutored topped the level for English in her Preliminary Exams, and her grade was just 2 marks away from a grade 7. This came as a very pleasant surprise for her as she used to only score a grade 5. Another student whom I also taught TOK scored an A for the subject (one of the few in the entire cohort) and she also pulled up her English Language and Literature grade from a 3 to a 6 after just 6 months of tuition. All these helped her achieve a grade of 40 for her total IB score. She has since been accepted into the NUS Business School and is pursuing her business degree there. I am most proud of two male students whom attended a week long crash course with me just a week before their IB Language and Literature exams. Both scored a 5, a great improvement from their previous score of a 3 and low 4. One of them was just 4 marks away from making the score of 6, which I find very heartening!

For the 2014 IB exams, 2 of my students scored 6 and one of them achieved the highest score in his school with 44 points. The first student is a boy from China who was taking English Language and Literature, which means he was taking English as his first language. He was previous scoring a grade 4 prior to lessons with me, so the vast improvement to a grade 6 greatly helped him in achieving his stellar overall results. The other student was 6 marks away from a grade 7, which is a fantastic improvement as she used to be a low grade 4 before lessons with me, but yet managed to score a high grade 6 in the IB exams. My other IB students scored 5s for English, and I am supremely proud of their results as many of them are from China and English is not their first language and forte. For Theory of Knowledge, the overall grades my students scored were 2 As and 5 Bs. Many of them only had lessons with me for 7-8 weeks in order to complete the TOK essay, and their performance is outstanding considering the short time I had to help them.

I have many years of teaching experience, great passion in helping students learn, as well as a solid proven track record of ensuring students improve significantly. (Testimonials from the different students I have taught are available for reference.) My keen interest in education is why I chose to become a full time tutor, and having tutoring as my full time job means that I am 100% dedicated to helping all my students learn and improve. With the right help, motivation and patient guidance, I truly believe that every student has the potential to excel in the subject.
