Self Introduction

My style of tuition is more about trust, caring, approachable, friendly and patient type, especially with my students. It is about building rapport and trust and fun conversations, if not, how do I sustain his interest academically for long periods (2 hours) over a span of 1-2 years?

Beyond that, pre-tuition planning before the lessons are usually meticulous, and I would often test the concepts and questions first, first as a revision, but more importantly, to have a feel of how the student might struggle, at what point would they require further explanation to help them through the difficult questions. These are my usual preparation before class.

Below is my story of my tuition experience with my student:

I started out tuition in May 2012, teaching an 'N' level student. It was through a friends' recommendation that got me started. At the end of four months and the eventual 'N' level exam, there were many hiccups along the way, such as the de-motivated students' frequent cancelling of tuition etc. He really started to focus during the month of the exam. I am proud to say, when he first started out, he was failing his combined physics and chem, and when he received his N level paper, he scored a B3. In year 2013, the mother wanted me to teach him Mathematics as well. Currently, I am still working on his Mathematics. He is still failing his Mathematics due to a lack of practice, unwilling to do the homework, and because as an 'N' level student, he is still not equipped with the thinking skills required of an A e-math student.

My student Brandon understands the design of my lesson. Because I only have 4 (sometimes even less, due to cancelled lessons by him) lessons per month, for Mathematics, I always train him how to think about the tough questions, increase his exposure to various papers so that he is less overwhelmed during exams. Of course, apart from good tutoring, his efforts to improve is key too.

In year 2013, the emphasis on combnined chemistry and physics is less on teaching and learning, for that is more for N level papers. It is more about trying out questions and trying to apply the concepts to questions. That is an area which I am currently working with the student right now.

Looking back, I am proud to say that I have understood my student very well. From the first day till now, we built a very strong rapport and trust and mutual respect - informing each other when our timing could not fit our schedule. Trust and communication on non-academic areas, such as the individual's interest, showing concern and sharing about inspirational videos, giving guidance on future paths and dreams are all important tools to motivating the students in excelling. Looking back, I think if I was chosen as a tutor, what makes me different will be that apart from focusing on academics progress, I would take a keen interest in understanding and communicating with the student, because only with trust and a certain comfort level, will I be able to exert and influence your child towards excellence.

Now is the month of July. I am confident to see through this student, and he definitely can excel when he decides to focus and work together with me, do homeworks and discuss about the academics.
