Self Introduction

I am a Subject Head / Curriculum Innovation in my school and had previously served as the Head of Department / English in acting capacity. My specialisation is in English Language and I'm both current and familiar with the demands of the old (1127) and new EL (1128) Syllabus. I have more than 10 years of tutoring experience since 2002, and I have a wealth of experience working with students from different entry levels, which include neighbourhood schools and schools with higher academic demands. (unlock secret) I am fully aware of the needs of international students who are trying to pick up English as well as students from non-English speaking families. Tutees who have benefited from my tutelage include students from Rosyth School, Nanyang Primary, Beatty Secondary, Crescent Girls High and NUS High.
I specialise in small group home tuition (4 ~ 5 students) at my place of residence by applying the Learning Circle concept. Some parents/students have reservations about group tuition and feel that one-on-one tuition may in fact be more effective. This is only true to a certain extent and more applicable for content or topical based subjects like Science or Mathematics. For a communicative subject such as English, the emphasis is really on familiarising students with the necessary skills, strategies, attitude and behavior in a natural interaction context -- Learning Circle fits excellently for this purpose as it provides opportunities for learners to engage in constructive conversations, therefore leading to an improvement in overall language skills for all.

A diagnostic assessment will be administered in the first session to determine the students’ strengths and areas for improvement in language. A wide spectrum of skills is covered to equip students with the necessary competencies in the different areas of language learning: Reading & Viewing, Listening & Viewing, Writing & Representing, Speaking & Representing, Grammar and Vocabulary. My class is geared towards equipping students with the necessary skills so that they have the competency and confidence to tackle the demands of the new English Syllabus 1128 (or old syllabus 1127) examination.

Paper 1 (Editing, Free Writing and Situational Writing): The teaching for this paper is especially concerned with students’ ability to express themselves clearly and effectively in written form. Feedback and feed forward will be provided based on the Cambridge Marking Rubrics so that students will know exactly where they are at and what the next steps necessary for improvement are.

Paper 2 (Comprehension and Summary): To excel in this paper, students will be taught how to read closely as well as critical thinking strategies that will enable them to have a deeper understanding of the texts they read. Students will also be taught specific comprehension skills that target the different components in Paper 2, including the summary section and the new visual text element.

Paper 3 (Listening Comprehension): Students will be exposed to a range of audio-visual texts to build up their listening and note-taking skills. These will be from a variety of sources including authentic videos and school-based examination resources.

Paper 4 (Oral Communication): Students will be trained to speak in an engaging and effective manner using speech techniques. They will also be coached how to elucidate their ideas clearly in the Spoken Interaction component using authentic Cambridge questions and topics.

Small group tuition sessions are held regularly throughout the week with timing typically planned around the school timetables of students in Singapore. The timings for classes are between 4.00pm to 9.00pm for weekdays and 10.00am to 4.00pm for weekends. The popular slots are from Friday afternoons to Sundays and these are filled up fast! Just before major assessments such as mid-year examinations, final-year examinations and the GCE ‘O’ levels, additional intensive revisions and preparation sessions may be conducted, upon the request of students.

*Group discount of $20 off monthly fees applies for everyone within the group if a student starts a class with 3 or 4 of his peers.

**For Lower Secondary students who prefer a larger group setting, you may enrol in my classes at a centrally located tuition centre (at Dhoby Ghaut).
